I'll be Kenya with World Vision during August 3-13th (my flight leaves JFK 7pm tonight). Our team consists of World Vision staff, child
sponsors, other 30 Hour Famine leaders like myself and members of a
student advocacy group from Columbia University (members of Inter Varsity). We'll be in the capital city of Nairobi a few days and then head 350km north to the town of Lakori near Lake Turkana. We'll be involved in some ADPs (Area Development Projects) such as food distribution and visiting sponsor children (I have so many toothbrushes packed in my bag as gifts).
Some of the issues facing Kenya right now. Please keep these in mind/pray for these: -Currently
it's the rainy season which is the equivalent of winter (the seasons
are reversed over there). Even though it's the rainy season, there's
been a drought going on. One of the projects we'll be doing is food
distribution. -Earlier this year there was major flooding in many parts of the
country and they are still recovering from that. -Last week there were a series of tremors in the southern part of Kenya, so an earthquake is being anticipated in the near future. -In February of this year, the U.S. state department issued a travel warning for Nairobi Kenya because of suspected terrorist activities and abductions.
On a more personal note: -Please keep our team in your thoughts and pray for team safety as we travel to Kenya and travel around Kenya -Team
dynamics: From all accounts, we all usually take on the role of leaders.
Please pray that we would all get along and work together. For most us,
we'll be meeting each other for the first time at the airport. -The people we'll meet and work with; that we would really be a blessing to each other. -My family. My brother is fine with my trip since he's an avid traveler
himself, but my Mom is a little worried with all the things she hears
on the news about Africa. It's been hard for me to explain to them that
I'm not worried. I'mnot naive or oblivious to the concerns/risks, but I'm at peace because of the assurance I have in my faith and Christ.
Check out our team blog at www.wvny.blogspot.com and please leave comments! People think my blog profile is funny...something about bowel movements...

I see the
king of glory
Coming down the clouds with fire
The whole earth shakes, the whole earth shakes
I see his love and mercy
Washing over all our sin
The people sing, the people sing
Hosanna, hosanna
Hosanna in the highest
I see a generation
Rising up to take the place
With selfless faith, with selfless faith
I see a new revival
Staring as we pray and seek
We're on our knees, we're on our knees
Hosanna, hosanna
Hosanna in the highest
Heal my heart and make it clean
Open up my eyes to the things unseen
Show me how to love like you have loved me
Break my heart for what is yours
Everything I am for your kingdom's cause
As I walk from earth into eternity

.david crowder this morning i woke up too late. it felt like my brain was hung over. i listened to david crowder band for over an hour, specifically "No One Like You" over and over and over and overrr... you may recall that we (our praise team) rocked out that song at the recent SH winter retreat. I used to knock that song for a variety of reasons like his singing style which sometimes evokes hyperventilating. to mimic his singing just take shallow breaths. and david crowder himself? ^ on the right he looks like a lion with that mane of his. but as with many things appearances and understanding can be quite different. after i started to subscribe to his xanga, i think i gained better insights of him as a believer, as a musician, and into his quirky creativity.
case in point, does anyone remember playing with a Speak & Math as a kid? according to the eloquent wikipedia entry: "The Speak & Math (or Speak & Maths in some countries) was a popular and revolutionary electronic toy created by Texas Instruments in 1980. Speak & Math was one of a three-part talking educational toy series that also included Speak & Spell and Speak & Read. The Speak & Math was sold in both the United States and in Europe; it was originally advertised as a tool for helping young children to become better at mathematics."
I didn't have one, but some of my friends had the Speak & Spell, the distinctly robot-sounding voice of those toys scared some kids. if memory serves me correct, i believe the shao family has one. anyway, back to david crowder. ever wonder what he uses to great those unique tones and effects in his songs (like the intro of "Here Is Our King")? I assumed it was a fancy effects machine or computer. one of the things he uses is this "crazy noise making device" as he calls it.
^it's a heavily modified Speak & Math they use to do circuit bending, intentionally short circuiting it to create other other-wordly sounds. it looks like it collided with a guitar and one of the effects theo uses. that picture always cracks me up so i will end this entry like so.
